How to remove false information about you from ChatGPT

You cannot edit the model. You can change what it reads, and for most cases that is the whole job.

Short answer

There is no edit button on a language model. False output is corrected by changing its inputs: removing or amending the source pages the claim comes from, and making accurate information easy to find and clearly attributed. Assistants that browse the live web update within days of a source changing; claims baked into training data take longer and are best displaced by stronger, better-sourced material.

Work out where the claim comes from

Ask the assistant directly for its sources, then ask the same question three or four different ways. The pattern of what it cites tells you which pages are actually driving the answer.

In most cases it is one or two: a news article, a complaint site listing, a forum thread. Assistants converge on whatever is prominent and appears authoritative for that name, which is usually the same handful of pages ranking in search.

The model is not inventing it. Something published it, and something ranked it.

Two different mechanisms, two different timelines

  • Retrieval. ChatGPT with browsing, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews fetch live pages at query time. Remove the source and the claim usually disappears within days to weeks.
  • Training data. Claims absorbed during training persist until the model is retrained, which you do not control. Here the realistic goal is displacement: make the accurate, well-sourced version the most prominent thing available so retrieval overrides the stale recollection.

What to publish so it gets picked up

Assistants favour material that is clearly attributed, dated, specific and structured. A vague corporate statement rarely displaces a specific allegation.

What works is a precise, factual page on an authoritative domain that directly addresses the claim, with dates and verifiable references. That is also exactly what search engines reward, which is why this work and traditional search work have converged. See why AI says something wrong about your business.

The reporting routes that exist

Major assistants provide feedback mechanisms for factual errors about individuals, and some have privacy request processes for personal data. These are worth using and are not sufficient on their own, because they address one output rather than the source.

Removing the source is what changes the answer for everyone who asks afterwards.

Common questions

Can I make an AI forget something?

Not directly. You can remove or outrank the sources it relies on, which changes what it says for retrieval-based systems almost immediately.

How long until the answer changes?

For browsing assistants, days to a few weeks after the source page changes. For claims held in training data, until the next retrain, which is why displacement matters.

Does correcting one assistant fix the others?

No, but they draw on overlapping sources, so fixing the source usually improves several at once.
