How to appear in Google's AI Overviews

The pattern behind what gets pulled into an overview, and why most pages are structurally unsuitable.

Short answer

AI Overviews pull short, self-contained passages that answer a question directly. Pages that get cited tend to answer the question in the first two or three sentences, use question-shaped headings, present facts in structured form, and sit on a domain with topical credibility. Long preambles before the answer are the single most common reason a well-written page is skipped.

Answer first, context second

The extractable unit is a passage that makes sense on its own. If your answer only makes sense after three paragraphs of scene-setting, there is nothing clean to lift.

This inverts the usual article structure. State the answer in the opening, then explain, qualify and expand. Every post in this journal is built that way deliberately, which is why each one opens with a short answer block.

If the first thing on the page is a story about why the topic matters, you will not be quoted.

Structural signals that help

  • Question-shaped H2s matching how people actually phrase the query.
  • Short paragraphs. Long blocks are harder to extract cleanly.
  • Lists and tables for anything enumerable, which are lifted readily.
  • A real FAQ section with genuine questions, marked up with FAQPage schema.
  • Explicit dates, figures and named sources rather than vague generalities.

The part that is not a trick

Overviews cite sources they treat as credible on that topic. A site with one page about a subject rarely displaces a site with a coherent body of work on it.

That is the argument for topic clusters rather than scattered posts: depth on a defined subject, internally linked, on a domain that is visibly about that subject. It is also why getting cited by Perplexity and ranking conventionally have stopped being separate projects.

Common questions

Does appearing in an overview cost me clicks?

Often yes for purely informational queries. The value is visibility and citation, which matters most where the reader then needs a provider.

Can I opt out?

There are indexing controls that affect eligibility, but opting out usually means losing the visibility without stopping competitors appearing.

How long does it take?

Overviews change frequently. Pages can start appearing within weeks of publication if the structure and authority are right.
