Short answer

Perplexity retrieves live pages and cites them explicitly, favouring content that answers the query directly, is recently updated, and is specific enough to quote. Because it shows its citations, you can see exactly which competitors it trusts on a topic and reverse-engineer the gap. Being crawlable and fast matters more here than on conventional search.

Use the citations as a research tool

Ask Perplexity the questions your customers ask. Then read what it cites, not just what it says.

You will usually find the same few domains recurring across a topic. That set is your actual competitive field for answer engines, and it is frequently different from who ranks in conventional search.

It shows its working. Read the sources it trusts and you know what to beat.

What its retrieval favours

  • Direct answers near the top of the page.
  • Recency, more heavily than conventional search. Dated and updated content is preferred.
  • Specificity: numbers, named processes, defined timeframes. Vague marketing prose is rarely quotable.
  • Clean, fast, crawlable pages. Content requiring heavy client-side rendering is a real disadvantage.
  • Topical consistency across the domain rather than one isolated post.

The technical floor

Answer engines fetch pages under time pressure. If your content only assembles after JavaScript execution, or the page is slow, you can lose on mechanics before content is considered.

Server-rendered HTML, sensible response times, and no interstitials over the content. Unglamorous, and it decides more outcomes than most content strategies do.

Common questions

Does Perplexity respect robots.txt?

It documents its crawlers and honours standard directives, so check you are not accidentally excluding the ones you want.

Do backlinks matter for AI citation?

Indirectly. They shape which pages are prominent enough to retrieve, but the passage-level match matters more than it does in classic ranking.

How do I track whether I am cited?

Ask a fixed set of questions on a regular schedule and record which sources appear. See how to track AI mentions of your brand.
