How to remove a negative review of a law firm

Attorneys have the narrowest response options of any profession, and the highest cost per lost enquiry.

Short answer

Report the review against a platform policy: not a client, about a different firm, personal attack, or conflict of interest. Removal for being negative is not available. Your response is constrained further than most professions, because confidentiality generally prohibits confirming a representation or discussing a matter even to correct an inaccuracy.

The confidentiality constraint

Professional conduct rules in most states prohibit revealing information relating to a representation without consent. State bars have disciplined attorneys for responding to online reviews with case details, including where the client disclosed them first.

So the instinctive reply, explaining that the client was actually advised of exactly this, is the reply that creates a bar complaint on top of a bad review.

A bad review costs you enquiries. A reply to it can cost you a licence.

What a compliant response looks like

"We take all client feedback seriously. Professional obligations prevent us from discussing any matter publicly. Please contact the firm directly if you would like to discuss your concerns."

It concedes nothing, discloses nothing, and reads to a prospective client as a firm that behaves properly. Detail is not available to you and its absence is not a weakness.

Where the review actually costs money

Legal services are high-value and referral-driven. A referred prospect who searches the firm and finds a page-one complaint frequently does not call, and the referrer never learns why.

That is why page one for the firm and partner names matters more than the review count on any single platform. See how bad reviews affect legal referrals.

Common questions

Can I respond if the reviewer was never a client?

Stating you have no record of the individual as a client is generally safer, but confirm with your state bar guidance first because approaches differ.

What about reviews from opposing parties?

Common and often removable as a conflict of interest, since they were never your client. Document the relationship for the platform.

Do bar rules apply to the firm's marketing agency?

The obligations follow the attorney. An agency posting on your behalf does not shift responsibility.
