How online reviews break a referral practice
The referral still happens. The call does not, and nobody tells you why.
A referred prospect almost always searches the firm before calling. A visible complaint on page one causes many of them not to call at all, and because they never made contact, the firm has no record of the loss. Referral-driven practices are more exposed to this than advertising-driven ones, not less.
The invisible loss
Firms often assume a strong referral network insulates them from online reputation issues. The opposite is closer to true: a referral raises the stakes of the search, because the prospect is now checking a recommendation rather than browsing options.
If the check goes badly they simply do not call, and they rarely tell the referrer. The referrer keeps referring, the firm keeps not hearing, and the conversion rate quietly falls.
The referral arrived. The prospect searched you. You will never know they existed.
What the check actually looks like
- The firm name and the individual attorney name, first page only.
- Reviews on Google and one or two legal directories.
- Any news result, particularly discipline or litigation involving the firm.
- Increasingly, an assistant asked to summarise the firm, which draws on all of the above.
Where to spend effort
Page one for the firm name and for each partner name is the asset. That means the firm site, claimed and completed directory profiles, and a current, credible review presence.
It also means removing items that are genuinely removable rather than living with them, since a referral practice cannot afford a visible complaint at position four. That is the case for reputation management for attorneys as a defensive rather than promotional exercise.
Common questions
How do I measure this?
Compare referrals promised by sources with enquiries actually received. A persistent gap is usually the search step.
Do referrers check us too?
Frequently, before they refer. A visible problem can quietly end a referral relationship.
Is this worse for certain practice areas?
It is sharpest in personal, high-stakes matters such as family, criminal and personal injury, where the client is anxious and researching hard.
