How to remove a defamatory TikTok video

TikTok moves fast in both directions. What you do in the first few hours matters more than on any other platform.

Short answer

Report the video in-app under harassment and bullying or misinformation, whichever fits, and submit a separate defamation report through TikTok's legal reporting form. Speed is decisive because reach compounds within hours. Preserve the video, the URL, the account and the view count before reporting, since removal destroys your evidence.

Preserve before you report

This is the step people skip and regret. The moment a video is removed, so is your record of what it said, how many people saw it, and who posted it.

Screen record the video with the view count and comments visible. Save the URL, the account handle and the posting time. If a legal route follows, this is the evidence, and it will not be recoverable later.

Capture it first. A successful removal deletes your proof along with the problem.

Two reporting routes, used together

The in-app report is fast and automated, and is best matched to harassment, bullying or misinformation categories. It handles clear policy breaches efficiently.

TikTok's separate legal or intellectual property reporting form is the route for defamation claims and takes a different path with human review. Submitting both is normal and neither cancels the other.

Why hours matter here

Distribution on TikTok is not driven by follower count. A video from an account with two hundred followers can reach hundreds of thousands within a day, and the shape of that curve is steep and early.

A removal at hour six is a different outcome from a removal at day four, even though both are successful, because by day four the content has been stitched, duetted and reposted by accounts you now have to chase separately. That is when a single item becomes a crisis rather than a takedown.

Common questions

What if the video does not name the business directly?

Identifiability matters more than naming. If the venue, uniform or location makes it clear who is meant, that is usually enough for both platform and legal purposes.

Should I comment on the video?

No. Comments increase engagement, which increases distribution, and your comment gets screenshotted.

What about the stitches and duets?

Each is a separate item requiring a separate report, which is why acting before they exist is worth so much.
