How to push down negative search results
Suppression is the fallback when removal is impossible. Here is what it really costs and how long it really takes.
Suppression works by publishing and strengthening enough authoritative pages about you that the negative result falls below the fold or onto page two. It takes three to six months at minimum, requires ongoing maintenance, and never removes the original, which reappears if the effort stops. It is the correct approach only when removal has been genuinely ruled out.
What suppression actually is
You are not moving the bad result down. You are moving other results up, and the bad one falls because there are only ten positions. That distinction explains everything about the cost and the timeline.
It means you need genuinely rankable assets: profiles on strong domains, owned properties, legitimate press, professional directories, published work. Thin pages built to fill slots do not hold position.
The honest economics
Suppression is an ongoing programme, not a project. The assets need maintaining and the position needs defending, which is why the industry standard is a monthly retainer with no end date.
Removal, when it is available, is a fixed cost that ends. That is the reason we look at removal first and treat suppression as the fallback rather than the default offer. The comparison is set out on our approach.
Suppression is rent. Removal is a purchase. Rent never stops.
When it is the right call
- The content is accurate and the publisher will not amend it.
- It is a court record or official document that cannot be removed.
- It is protected opinion rather than a false statement of fact.
- Several similar items exist and removing one changes nothing.
When it is the wrong call
If the item is a fake review, a non-customer complaint, a data-broker profile or a policy-violating post, suppression is the expensive way to avoid doing the thing that would have worked. Check viability before signing a retainer.
Common questions
How long before I see movement?
Meaningful movement usually starts around month three and consolidates over six to twelve months, depending on how competitive your name is.
What happens if I stop paying?
Assets decay, competitors publish, and the original returns to where it was. That is inherent to the model rather than a failure of a particular vendor.
Can suppression and removal run together?
Yes, and often should. Remove what is removable first, then suppress only what genuinely remains.
