How reviews actually affect restaurant bookings

Rating thresholds, recency, and the specific point where diners stop considering you.

Short answer

Diners filter by rating before they read anything, so the practical effect is binary: above the threshold you are considered, below it you are not shortlisted at all. Recency then decides among the survivors, because a diner reading reviews from two years ago assumes the information is stale. Total volume matters mainly for how stable your rating is.

The filter happens before the reading

Discovery platforms let people filter by rating, and most do. That makes the rating a gate rather than an input: below the threshold, your reviews are never read at all, however good the recent ones are.

This is why a restaurant can improve materially and see no booking change for months. Nobody is looking yet.

Below the filter, your best reviews are invisible. Nobody is reading them.

What matters after the gate

  • Recency. A cluster of reviews from this month signals a currently good restaurant. Silence signals decline.
  • Response presence. Diners read management responses and treat them as a proxy for how you handle problems.
  • Photos. User photos are heavily weighted in the decision and you do not control them.
  • The single worst recent review, which many people deliberately read first.

Operational, not marketing

The reliable lever is a consistent ask at the end of a good service, applied to everyone rather than to guests who seemed happy, since screening is prohibited on every major platform.

Restaurants that build this into the close-out routine hold their ratings through bad weeks. Restaurants that ask only after a complaint spend permanently. For the removal side, see how to remove a bad restaurant review.

Common questions

What rating do I need?

It varies by market and platform, but the filters people actually use cluster around four stars and above. Know where the gate sits in your city.

Do older bad reviews still hurt?

Less than recent ones, though they continue to weigh on the average until volume dilutes them.

Is it worth paying for review platform advertising?

It can drive visibility, but it does not change moderation or ratings, and it does not fix a rating below the filter threshold.
