How long a news cycle actually lasts

Attention fades in days. The search results do not, and that gap is where the real work sits.

Short answer

Active attention on most stories peaks within 24 to 72 hours and decays substantially within a week or two. The search footprint does not decay: articles keep ranking for the business or individual name for years. Confusing the two leads businesses to panic during the phase they cannot influence and relax during the phase they can.

Two curves, wrongly treated as one

Attention is a spike: shares, comments, calls, coverage. It rises fast, peaks quickly, and falls away.

Search presence is a plateau. The article that ran on day one is still position four for your name in three years, quietly costing you enquiries long after everyone stopped talking about it.

Almost every mistake in crisis response comes from treating the plateau like the spike.

Everyone stops talking about it in a week. It ranks for your name for years.

What to do in each phase

  • Days 0 to 3, the spike. Containment, accuracy, preservation. Do not attempt removal of live coverage; you will not succeed and you may generate a follow-up.
  • Days 3 to 14, the decay. Stop responding. Let it fall. Continue preserving and monitoring for platform jumps.
  • Week 3 onward, the plateau. Now the productive work begins: correction and update requests, syndication cleanup, de-indexing where grounds exist, and displacement.

Why waiting is a tactic

A correction request sent while a story is live is handled by a newsroom defending its reporting. The same request sent six weeks later is handled as routine record-keeping by a different person with no stake in the argument.

The success rate difference is substantial, and it is the single most useful piece of timing knowledge in this work. See removing negative press about a CEO.

Common questions

What extends a cycle?

A response, a legal threat, a new development, or a second outlet finding a new angle. Three of those four are within your control.

Does deleting our social posts help?

No. Deletions get noticed and screenshotted, and the deletion becomes a new story.

How long until search results settle?

Rankings usually stabilise a few weeks after coverage stops, and that is the point to begin the durable work.
