Why Yelp reviews disappear: recommended vs not recommended

The filter that decides which reviews count toward your rating, and why you cannot appeal it.

Short answer

Yelp's software sorts reviews into recommended and not recommended. Only recommended reviews are displayed by default and count toward your star rating. The sort is automated and based on signals like reviewer activity and history, not on whether the review is true, and there is no appeal process for it.

What the filter is reacting to

Yelp does not publish the algorithm, but the observable pattern is consistent: reviews from established, active accounts with a history across many businesses tend to be recommended. Reviews from accounts with a single review, no photo and no history often are not.

That is why a glowing review from a genuine happy customer who joined Yelp specifically to write it frequently vanishes, while a harsh review from a prolific reviewer sticks.

The filter is not judging whether a review is fair. It is judging whether the account looks established.

Why this matters commercially

Your displayed rating is calculated from recommended reviews only. This means your public rating can move without a single new review being written, simply because the filter reclassified something.

It also means the standard advice to ask happy customers for reviews performs poorly on Yelp, because newly created accounts are exactly the profile the filter tends to discount, and soliciting is against Yelp's own guidance.

What you can and cannot do about it

You cannot appeal a filtering decision, and no vendor can move a review between the two sections. Anyone offering to is selling something they do not control.

What you can do is report reviews that break the Content Guidelines regardless of section, and focus your effort on the platforms where effort actually compounds. For most local businesses that means Google first. See how to remove a Yelp review for the reporting route that does exist.

Common questions

Can a not-recommended review become recommended later?

Yes, the classification is re-evaluated over time and reviews move in both directions without notice.

Do not-recommended reviews affect my rating?

No, they are excluded from the displayed star rating, though they remain publicly viewable behind a link.

Is there any way to see why a review was filtered?

No. Yelp does not disclose per-review reasoning and there is no appeal.
