Short answer

The reliable early signals are a change in the questions people ask you, a drop in conversion without a drop in traffic, unusual search terms in your analytics, a cluster of similar complaints, and new results appearing on page two for your name. All of them typically precede visible damage by weeks.

The five signals

  • Prospects asking a new question. When several people independently ask whether something is true, they read it somewhere. Ask them where.
  • Conversion falling while traffic holds. People are still arriving and researching, and something they find is stopping them. This is the classic signature of a page-one problem.
  • Odd branded search terms. Your name plus scam, complaint, lawsuit or reviews appearing in Search Console means people are actively investigating you.
  • A cluster of similar complaints. Three reviews mentioning the same thing in a month is a pattern, not noise, and usually points at something real.
  • New results on page two. Where next quarter's page-one problem lives today.

The one people ignore

Conversion falling with traffic flat is the most reliable and the most consistently misdiagnosed signal in this work. It gets attributed to pricing, seasonality, the website, the sales team, the market.

Before spending on any of those, search your own name in a private window and read the first two pages as a customer would. It costs ten minutes and it explains a surprising share of unexplained conversion drops.

Traffic flat, conversion down. Search your own name before you redesign anything.

Acting early is the whole advantage

A forum thread at position fifteen with two comments is a different problem from the same thread at position four with sixty. A video with four hundred views is different from the same video with forty thousand.

Nothing about the item changed; what changed is the cost of dealing with it. That gap is the entire economic argument for monitoring, and it is why what to monitor online for your business is worth setting up before you need it.

Common questions

How do I check search terms?

Google Search Console shows the queries bringing people to your site, including branded ones. Filter for your brand name and read what accompanies it.

Is one bad review a warning sign?

Usually not. Three describing the same issue is.

What if I find something on page two?

Assess removability now rather than waiting. Items are far easier to address before they gain links and attention.
